What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition characterized by the gradual deterioration of specific brain cells over time. With approximately 145,000 individuals in the UK living with Parkinson's, it remains one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions worldwide.

The condition develops as the brain's dopamine cells cease to function properly and are progressively lost. As a result, the brain struggles to produce enough dopamine to regulate movement effectively, leading to the emergence of symptoms.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

The symptoms of Parkinson's disease may be noticeable before an official medical diagnosis is made. The three main symptoms include slow movement, tremors (involuntary shaking of specific body parts), and stiff and inflexible muscles.

While there are over 40 symptoms associated with Parkinson's, each person may experience them differently. Other physical and psychological symptoms may include sleep problems, mild memory and thinking issues, balance problems, urinary issues or constipation, loss of smell, difficulties in swallowing, chewing, and speaking, as well as depression and anxiety.
